The annotated persuasion6/12/2023 His notes constitute the most sustained critical commentary ever brought to bear on the novel and explicate its central conflicts as well as its relationship to Austen's other works, and to those of her major contemporaries, including Lord Byron, Walter Scott, and Maria Edgeworth. In his Introduction, distinguished scholar Robert Morrison examines the broken engagement between Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth, and the ways in which they wander from one another even as their enduring feelings draw them steadily back together. The abundance of color illustrations allows the reader to see the characters, locations, clothing, and carriages of the novel, as well as the larger political and historical events that shape its action. In the same format that so rewarded readers of Pride and Prejudice: An Annotated Edition, it offers running commentary on the novel (conveniently placed alongside Austen's text) to explain difficult words, allusions, and contexts, while bringing together critical observations and scholarship for an enhanced reading experience. This richly illustrated and annotated edition brings her last completed novel to life with previously unmatched vitality. It is her most passionate and introspective love story. Published posthumously with Northanger Abbey in 1817, Persuasion crowns Jane Austen's remarkable career.

Nona the ninth audiobook6/12/2023 But I have also read a number of other book series where books were split and new entries added-with authors that include George RR Martin, Isabelle Carmody and most recently, Jim Butcher-and it is not always a resounding success. It tickles a spot that almost nothing else reaches. But then just over a year ago, there was the announcement that we were getting an extra entry: the last book had split at the seams, apparently, and we were going to get a book focused on Nona.Įxcept we had not been introduced to a Nona?įor anyone who has read my reviews of the previous two books, you would know that I am an unabashed fan of this series. And when Harrow The Ninth was released, we were all assured it was two down and one to go. Oh look, it’s a surprise book! When I first picked up Gideon the Ninth a few years back, it was advertised as being part one of a trilogy. Mild spoilers for the series in the review, more pressing ones have had the whiteout treatment.

Thief Liar Lady by D.L. Soria6/11/2023 In becoming betrothed to Prince Everett of Solis, Ash is now well-placed to be able to influence treaty talks regarding Eloria, which has been subjugated after the last war and been heavily mined of the lustre needed for magic, and help prevent the looming war that’s festering as an Elorian rebellion begins to visibly resurface. Soria’s Thief Liar Lady.Įagerly and oft repeated by the masses is a tale of magical transformation for an orphaned and abused maid into the auspicious lady who captured the prince’s heart, but isn’t quite what people make it out to be instead, the reality is that Ash, posing in a meek persona as Lady Aislinn, intricately planned for this outcome and enchanted the prince, in part using magic and skills taught to her throughout her youth within the plan devised by her less-than-pleasant stepmother and in part following her own secret and rebellious plans to serve slightly different ends with the same driving motivation for power. A cleverly crafted con has the veneer of an endearing fairytale romance but the truth behind it masks more massive consequences in D.L.

The last lion alone6/10/2023 Recognizing the horrifying truth, Churchill stood almost alone against Nazi aggression and the sordid British and French policy of appeasement. Yet despite his personal and political troubles, Churchill managed to assemble a vast, underground intelligence network-both within the British government and on the continent-which provided him with more complete and accurate information on Germany than the British government. During this period, Churchill was tested as few men are: relentlessly pursued by creditors, disowned by his own party, vociferously dismissed by the press as a warmonger, and twice nearly lost his seat in Parliament. In this volume, we witness the war within, before the colossal war to come. Alone is the second volume of William Manchester's brilliant three-volume biography of Winston Churchill. |
