A Line in the Sand by Sherry Garland6/6/2023 ![]() The rest is true.Įven though Line in the Sand is mainly for Young Adults, it elucidates what happened in 1836. The fiction part is Lucinda and her thoughts. As far as I can tell it is historically accurate. It also describes how settlers in Gonzales, Goliad and San Antonio reacted to the near certainty of having to fight to the death for freedom. ![]() Some of the interesting points from Lucinda’s view are the daily life of a family of settlers in south Texas when that territory had just become a part of Mexico also the difficulty of starting a new life in the West for pioneers coming from other areas, the constant fear of Comanches and Santa Ana’s army, the unruly behavior of the Tennessee Volunteers, the difficulty of planting and harvesting every year and the political uncertainty of living in a country not yet a country. ![]() “A Line in the Sand: The Alamo Diary of Lucinda Lawrence” by Sherry Garland is a fictional epistolary record of events leading up to, during and after the battle of the Alamo in 1836, Lucinda records in her personal diary her feelings about her family, her friends, the events taking place in the fall of 1835 and the spring of 1836. ![]()

The three daughters of eve6/6/2023 ![]() in the process, Shafak explores the precarious state of Turkish politics, the evolving position of women in Islam, the sexual ambiguities of college life, and the most profound questions of faith. Peri is such a fascinating heroine because she remains intensely engaged in this debate but resolutely disinterested. the story that develops keeps circling around that struggle, moving from her parents’ domestic squabbles to the central conundrum of theodicy: the challenge of reconciling an all-good, all-powerful God with an often-evil and chaotic world. an ingenious act of compression that works several decades into a single evening. ![]() Sexual harassment, Islamist terrorism, the rising tension between the faithful and the secular, and the gaping chasm between the rich and the poor - all play out in the pages of Three Daughters of Eve. Elif Shafak’s new novel reveals such a timely confluence of today’s issues that it seems almost clairvoyant. ![]()

Mister Sandman by Barbara Gowdy6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Mistakenly grouped with works such as Animal Farm, Gowdy’s story sharply departs from the fabulist tradition, which uses animal behaviour to highlight human folly. The White Bone tells the story of Mud, a young orphaned elephant, and her adoptive family as they roam sub-Saharan Africa in search of the “Safe Place,” free from human violence. Gowdy argues that, if animals have emotions and consciousness (and ethological research confirms this), then animals likely have stories. It may well be true, by the way, that elephants never forget.” – Barbara Gowdy ![]() “ The White Bone is an attempt, however presumptuous, to make a huge imaginative leap - to imagine what it would be like to be that big and gentle, to be that imperiled, and to have that prodigious a memory. ![]()

Meyer cinder6/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Though foreshadowing early on makes it fairly clear where the story is headed, it unfolds with the magic of a fairy tale and the breakneck excitement of dystopian fiction. Several events abruptly turn Cinder’s world upside down: a chance meeting with the handsome Prince Kai has her heart racing a plague pandemic threatens her beloved sister Peony Cinder learns she is immune to the plague and the evil Lunar Queen Levana arrives on Earth, scheming to marry Kai. Cinder is a talented teenage mechanic and cyborg-part human, part robot-who has been living in New Beijing with a demanding adoptive mother and two stepsisters, ever since her late stepfather took Cinder in after a hovercraft accident. But debut author Meyer’s brilliance is in sending the story into an entirely new, utterly thrilling dimension. ![]() First in the Lunar Chronicles series, this futuristic twist on Cinderella retains just enough of the original that readers will enjoy spotting the subtle similarities. ![]()

![]() ![]() I like this entry in Powers, but I feel that it is a bit less powerful than some of the previous entries in scope. Unlike something like Top 10 (which I also loved), it had enough regularity and issues that it was able to really expand the idea and concepts…and push things further than you might expect. I found it a creative take on both superhero comics and police procedurals. Comics in this collection were also included as part of Powers Omnibus, Powers-Book 2, and Powers-Volume 3. Issues in this collection were originally published by Image but reprints were done by Marvel under their Icon imprint. ![]() Following Powers Volume 5: Anarchy, the series features art by Michael Avon Oeming. Written by Brian Michael Bendis, Powers Volume 6: The Sellouts is an Image Comics superhero procedural book. ![]() ![]() Now the police suspect that the murder of Red Hawk could be an inside job…and no one is off limits.
