Red House by Sonya Clark6/8/2023 ![]() Americans of African descent-and particularly black women-managed to preserve the culture of their ancestry, often at their own peril, by passing their histories down through craft-based folk traditions. ![]() ![]() The first approach, rooted in American history from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, grew out of the horrific repression of slavery, when little formal education was available to black people living in the United States. The exhibition traces two artistic threads that entwined to produce groundbreaking and evocative works across a range of mediums, which continue to influence artistic dialogue today. The 37 artists in POWER draw into focus their struggle to establish themselves as equal players on the uneven field of the American republic. Titled after the 1970 gospel song by Sister Gertrude Morgan, the exhibition begins with artists born soon after the Civil War and continues to the present, weaving together fine and folk art traditions to explore how artists have engaged issues of race, gender, and class against our evolving cultural and artistic landscape. Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles, is proud to present POWER, an exhibition curated by Todd Levin that surveys the work of African American women artists from the nineteenth century to now. ![]() Work By African American Women From The Nineteenth Century To Now ![]()

North south gaskell6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() From My Victorian Novel: Critical Essays in the Personal Voice Edited by Annette R. I resonate with Manchester's experience in Manchester and her deep ambivalence around privilege, geography, and the limits of narrative empathy. While not immune to the effects of social geography herself, Gaskell’s nonetheless exposes the structural obstacles to cross-class empathy that were built into the new urban and industrial landscape. North and South anticipates and illuminates contemporary research on social geography, in particular the perceptual, behavioral, and political effects of social segregation. Despite the novel's clarion call for "loving thy neighbour" as moral imperative, Gaskell was cognizant that impediments to love and compassion inhere within the spaces in which we live and move. ![]() I write about my evolving relationship with Elizabeth Gaskell's 1854 industrial novel North and South. ![]()

The Rock of Achill by Jim Sheehan6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() And so on.Īnother thing that I liked about the book is the tension. At one moment you find yourself on a sinking ship, next moment you enjoy bellydancers in Morocco, then you meet witches in the desert, then you admire the first snow on the rooftops of Dublin. One can truly say that the author knows how to create a great atmosphere. I have never loved action scenes that much, but I love travelling and love to read about all the real and fantastic places where the author takes me. ![]() ![]() He brings us details but makes sure at the same time that we always know where we are and what’s happening. Sheehan describes the epic battles in a way that you feel you’re part of it, fighting for your life. If you enjoy action scenes, then the book is perfect for you. Fights with monsters and demons keep you occupied for hours. Motivated by money to buy off his land and the wish to restore the ancient kingdom, he dives headfirst into the adventures. Donn, the main character, is soon joining Irish knights. Just like in all good stories, the characters are not meant to stay together very long. Set in 19th century rural Ireland, the author does a magnificent job describing the green pastures, running cattle and two young people meeting in a windswept island. Jim Sheehan’s “The Rock of Achill” is a captivating read for anyone who loves history, epic adventures, fantasy and a good steamy romance. ![]()
